It could have been the first day for the series. Serenity was intended to be the pilot, but Fox decided they wanted something else to show first. So Joss whipped up the script for the Train Job episode - very late in the game - in about two days. . .

Quite realistic. Napping on the job is what we did a lot of in the military on the flight line between missions. Lay down any chance you got, no matter where you were or how many bombs were nearby.

FF was all about "rustic realism", as real as you can get in the oxymoron of science fiction. Clever Joss to utilize his clever stunt extras.
